About
Inner Word was formed in 2024 in London by Will Green & Phil McDermott. Will Green began DJing drum n bass at free parties and teknivals in the ‘90s with the soundsystem collective Hekate. From this free party scene emerged a raucous live drum n bass band called Deadsilence Syndicate that he played ‘cello and synths in for many years. Will now works as a primary school music teacher. He met Phil, a professional storyteller, when he came in to tell stories at his school. The pair began working together in 2021 with Dan Hekate, under the name Brace Brace: a music/theatre/film concept telling the story of three air stewards crash-landed in an uncanny parallel world. The band played gigs in Rome, Lyons, Amsterdam and London and released their debut album ‘Welcome Aboard’ in May 2025. By this time founding member Dan Hekate had chosen to leave the crew and a new project - more direct and funky, less cinematic and glitchy - was well underway. Chris Pullan (Industrial Funk) was brought in to provide extra beats and synths on a number of tracks. By August 2025 a new album had been completed and in March 2026 Inner Word’s first album ‘New City’ was released. Like Welcome Aboard, the album tells a story. This time it is a story of those people who populate the New City: chancers, losers, boozers, tech bros. A collaboration with East African Records has resulted in The Uganda Connection: three tracks from the New City album with additional vocals and percussion from Rahma Naigaga and Erick Kogongo. This was recorded in Kampala, Uganda, and will be released on May 1st. Inner Word are currently completing a second album due for release in September 2026.
