About

We see this collection of songs as a bunch of fables…give us the mic for a moment or two… Ranj, Sarb & Zaki grew up in Southall, West London, under the flightpath of Heathrow Airport, surrounded by other immigrants (first and second generation). Working-class folk with low incomes, desperation, poverty, addiction. But also with big hearts, and extended families. The food, the colours, the clash of cultures. In amongst all the noise, there were people with lots of stories. These might be them. Tom flew in from Jersey, landing down the road. But we didn’t come together until we met in North London. And then we made music. How is not important right now. The songs are. And so, onto them… Chasing Dragons is an introspective meandering in which we find ourselves battling between Nirvana and Tolkien and Wu Tang. Nobody wins, and nobody loses. Doors open and they don’t shut, but everyone sees the light. And you know, the imagery lends itself to colour and drama. Bollywood. Bhangra. The Battle of Flowers. Shabads. Sermons. Spirituality. The music falls into place, and then out of time. Cos that’s what you expect in a place of worship. There’s no start and no end. There’s a coming together. A battle. Richer was in part inspired by the London riots in 2011. And there’s a nod to the French film ‘The beat my heart skipped’, about a man who had to choose between being a gangster or a concert pianist. And a post-pandemic distrust of British politics. Mother Said you got rocks in your head. A dysfunctional love story. Who is the protagonist? Ever felt so happy you feel guilty? A love song that turns into a funeral procession…as Lennon said, it’s real love.
